Both Mac and PCs have attracted their own group of followers. Based on the general characteristics of the users, researchers and survey companies came up with an expected profile of the users of Mac and of the users of PCs. These data will also be helpful to Mac and PC companies in identifying their target markets.
In 2006, studies showed that approximately 80% of the total Mac population fall under the 55 years old category. The average age of male Mac users is 39 years old compared to the 41 years old average age of a male PC user. Five years later, significant and not-so-significant changes could be seen in the data.
In 2011, more PC users fall under the 35 – 49 age category. The percentage gap is estimated to be at 22%. However, 22% more Mac users also fall under the 18 – 34 age category. Common themes have also been observed in other core demographic characteristics. Studies showed that 52 % more Mac users live in cities and urban areas. Meanwhile, 21% more PC users reside in rural areas and suburbs.
